Facts: R is an 18-year-old young man from El Salvador who fled to the U.S. to escape violence at the hands of a criminal gang after he was assaulted and threatened. R's cousin was brutally assaulted by gang members and fled to the U.S. in 2015; after she left, he began to be targeted by the men who attacked her. R was abandoned by his father when he was four years old and R has not spoken to his father since the age of six. He has not had contact with his father in more than a decade nor has R's father provided any financial support. R does not even know where his father lives. R is afraid of the men who assaulted his cousin and threatened him. He came to the U.S. to reunite with his aunt, uncle, and cousins, with whom he lives. R had nearly graduated high school when he left El Salvador, and unfortunately, now, he has to start high school over. It is frustrating to start school all over again but R is committed to improving his English language skills and completing his education so that he can pursue his career goals. He is interested in business administration, medicine, or public accounting.

Legal Assessment: R is in removal proceedings and is eligible for Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS), a visa for children who have been abused, abandoned or neglected by a parent. This status will allow R to remain in the U.S. with his aunt and cousins. R needs a dedicated pro bono advocate to fight his case before the local family court and the Immigration Court.

R is a Spanish speaking client.
