B is a victim of domestic violence who was abandoned by her U.S. citizen husband. Help B fight...

  • Client Location: New York
  • Type of Relief: Asylum in Immigration Court

PLACED

Facts:  B is originally from Trinidad and Tobago. She is victim of domestic violence who was abandoned by her U.S. citizen husband, leaving her legal status in limbo – she is now in removal proceedings and faces the risk of deportation. The risk of family separation in her case poses serious challenges for her as she is the caretaker of her 15 year old son, who is autistic and has been receiving special needs for nine years. Her son’s father is unable to support their needs as he is currently serving a long-term prison sentence. Although she has experienced abuse at the hands of her ex-husbands, she has never let that stop her from taking care of her family or community; she works full-time and frequently volunteers at her church.

Legal assessment:  B needs a committed pro bono volunteer advocate to help her fight her case in immigration court so that she can remain lawfully in the U.S. with her son. She will be pursuing cancellation of removal. B's next master calendar hearing is scheduled for June 21, 2019.

B is an English-speaking client.
